The Last Ride Micro Fiction

The Last Ride
A Micro Fiction Story

I walk into the garage. I can’t stop the tears when I see it. I don’t even try. My dad’s car. It is a classic, and my dad’s very first car. The car he dated my mom in, the car I was conceived in (if one believed the stories my parents told), the car I was born in, the car he gifted to me when I was just sixteen, the car he took care of for me when only six months later I turned seventeen and joined the Marines, because I had to protect my nation from the enemy, for they had attacked our civilians, and the car he should be handing me the keys to now, eight years later, that I am home, from the war.
I didn’t want to come home like this; I didn’t want to be called just a few weeks before the end of my tour to come home because of this reason. I turned away from the car when a throat cleared behind me.
There stood my fiancé, in his dress blues, he handed me a compact mirror. I opened it and looked into it, my red eyes contrasted with the dark dress blues; they made my normally tanned skin look as pale as a ghost.
“Honey, it is time to go.” He stated as he came to hold my hand.
I nod and go to get in the car. “He should hear it one last time. After all, it is been around for all his major moments, it should be in the procession to his final resting spot.”
My husband just got in and was the silent support I need as I say my last good bye, in the car’s last ride, to my dad.

I had said the last time, was the last time. Yet here I am lying next to her. I don’t love her. I barely lust for her.
Yet, I am lying here. Next to her. And not him.
            My husband who adores me.
I am lying in this on call room with her, and all I really want to do is be lying next to him. I could blame the adrenaline of being a world renowned surgeon, who just did the impossible. But it would be a lie. A horrible lie.
She is a drug. And she has got to go. I knew exactly what I would have to do as she walked to the shower.
So, I take the needle out as she finishes her shower. She walks up to kiss me and I allow it. I raise my hand and just inside her ear piercing I plunged the drug into her system.
I don’t catch her when she falls. I use the blankets to move her to the bed.
I walk out of the on call room when I get a page.
With that I killed my drug addiction.
And nobody would ever know about that last kiss…

Insomnia Café: Staff Sgt. Vevila Baxter

"I was born in holy water, but forged in the fires of hell. May God’s love have mercy upon my damaged soul.” ~ Staff Sgt. Vevila Baxter

Prologue:

When I was fifteen I lied about my age and joined the military. Two and half years made no difference. I had my high school diploma. But college? Not my scene. I after all was a street rat.
When I was twenty seven a bullet ended my military career. I literally was going to make it my life choice, but I am not one for a desk job. So the bullet that took out three pounds of my thigh? Yeah, sent me back into civilian life after twelve years. I walked into the Marines with nothing to my name. I walked out with a cane with a skull head and ruby eyes, with a healthy sized savings account. After all, how was I going to spend my paycheck when I was doing missions that weren’t even fully put on the books?
After a year of physical therapy I choose to take my life savings and open up an all-night café. Why a café? Because it allowed my insomnia an outlet and it allowed me to use those skills my father taught me before he was died when I was eight, he had been a baker. So a few self-taught lessons to catch up on baked goods, I settled down in the big city and opened up my café.
I named it Insomnia Café.
What I didn’t expect was that it would become the Switzerland in a sea of crazy.
From the very first ‘villain’ and the very first ‘hero’ to walk into my doors I declared neutral and stayed out of it. There was no way I was going to be drawn into any type of drama. I did the hero thing. I wanted nothing to do with it. I did the villain thing. I wanted nothing to do with it. I was now neutral.
The city is full of characters, and most of them are my regulars. From Superheroes to Super Villains to Everyday Heroes to the standard criminals to the regular Joe off the street; they are all my customers.
My café has become a central hub that is neutral and a safe place for all. Where all is safe, where all laws seem to become non-existent, where nobody breaks my rules, after all for being a normal human, I can cause fear in the worst of super villains and heroes alike.
These are my stories of my regulars at Insomnia Café.
