A GUARDIAN'S LIFE: THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS

“Yeah. Look, I can take care of Wrath…” I never got to finish my sentence as Wrath broke through my window. I immediately went into fighting mode, as did Careia, but I pushed her behind me.
“You lost last time, Catherine. Why are you trying again?”
“I will not lose this time. And, Satan, you belong in hell.”
“Ooo… Scary. I am shaking in my boots.” Wrath launched himself at me.
But I was prepared, and pushed him back. We both went through the window, falling to the ground. I hoped that nobody was below us; it was too late to take back my actions. We crashed to the ground. “Satan, can’t we do this the easy way?”
“No, I am going to finally kill you. You will die a Guardian’s true death!”
“I don’t think so. This time you will not win against me. I will not be going to hell today, but you will be.” I told him calmly as I prepared to attack.
“I don’t think so mutt!” Wrath screamed at me and jumped at me.
Of course I fought back. I matched him hit for hit. I heard him summon the horseman and the Devil’s Lap Dogs. “You think he will be able to help you this time? I am not that green Guardian anymore who let feelings and emotions rule her. I am the very being that monsters fear! You are a thing that bumps in the night; and I am a monster who bumps back!”
“You won’t win; your soul will go to limbo for eternity!” Wrath stated as the horseman came into sight.
“Yes I will.” I took a knife from my side and aimed right for the horseman’s core and threw my knife with everything I had. I watched as the horseman exploded in a ball of flames, and I watched as James and my boys pulled up. I knew they would fight. “The Devil’s Lap Dogs, take them out! You need to aim for the heart!” I yelled as Wrath picked me up and threw me as far as he could, which is pretty far.
The back and forth with me and Wrath seemed to go on for hours. Somehow we ended up in front of a baseball diamond. I knew there were people in there, but I had to end this, and I had to get him away from the crowd. But before I could do anything he attacked, and I acted out of pure instinct, as I transformed into my Gray Wolf/Demon persona.
I threw him through the diamond right onto the field. I walked in like I owned the place; I went to him picking him up by the collar. I realized the National Anthem was being sang, the shock was evident on the singer’s face. But I held Wrath still as he finished. After the song finished I turned to the singer, “thank you.” I threw Wrath over the wall, and followed him over the wall.
“You will pay for that, Catherine.” Wrath sneered at me, as he picked himself up off the ground.
“Maybe, but not tonight.” I pulled my sword from my back, as I transformed back into myself. Finally I was calm.
“You need your demonic strength to bring me down!” Wrath said as he stood up, and transformed into his true self.
“No, no I don’t.” I said with a smile, as my husband’s arrow hit Wrath square in the back, piercing his heart. “I don’t need to be demonic to beat you because I have a family… I have love.” I said as Wrath turned to dust.

The Monster Within
Katherine Rochholz
I flip the channels on the television.  I am sick of all these black and white monster movies.  They were big in the 1940’s.  Now that was a time to live in for a monster.  They started to romanticize us; I had a blast.  I miss those days.  Where I could at least be myself; until they started to romanticize the monsters, we were hunted.  And a hunt is how I ended up the monster I am.  This is my story.
“Henry,” my wife called out to me.  “Lord Baron is at the door.”
I looked up from my journal.  I couldn’t stand that man, but he was the leader of our little group of monster hunters.  “Coming, love.”  I stood up from my desk and threw my journal in the drawer locking it.
“Henry!  Old man, how are you?”  Lord Baron greeted me as I walked into the drawing room.
“Jacob.”  I said in a way of greeting.  “What has caused the pleasure of your company?”
“Heard about a monster or two, werewolves I think.  I am not sure if it is only one or two, but it seems like a lot of death for just one.”
“They are nasty things to hunt during the full moon cycle.  Do we have an idea who their mortal host is?”
“No.”  Jacob stated simply as the maid set down our tea tray, a tray I knew would sit untouched, but it was the proper thing to offer.
            “Tea?”
            “How about a nice brandy?”
I knew he would ask, so I walked to the bar and poured him a good portion.  “Here you are.”  I stated and sat down across from him.
“So when do you want to start the hunt?”
“Tomorrow night is the first night of the full moon.”
            “Fine.  You contact the others?”
“Of course.  How is that little project to try to increase our strength going?”
“I am going to test it on myself later.”
“Shouldn’t you try it on a servant first?”
“Should the servants really have that much strength if it works?”  I said, though I was a fair boss and didn’t believe my help was below myself, I didn’t want to endanger their lives, however Lord Baron thought otherwise.
“Fair point.  Let me know how it goes.”  Jacob finished his brandy and stood up to leave.
I stood with him.  “Jacob, until tomorrow.”  I stated and showed him out.
“What did he want?”  My wife asked.
“Love, just business.  We are going to have a meeting tomorrow night.  I won’t be back until late.”
            “I hate your meetings.”
“I know, but they must happen.”  I kissed my wife’s check and retreated back to my study.
I pulled out my journal once more and started to look over my notes.  I had brewed the formula yesterday, and let it set.  It was a moment of truth.  A moment that would have defined our hunting expeditions.
I drank it.  At first nothing happened and then a burning sensation traveled through me.  It threw me to the ground; I thought I for sure was going to die.  But I didn’t.  I stood up.  Nothing about me had changed.  I was upset.  I tried to pick up the desk but could not; that meant the last three months were for naught.  I would have to start from scratch again another day.
The next night I took my horse and rode off to meet up with Jacob and the rest of the group of hunters.  When I got there they were all there looking quite worried, the town had already been destroyed by the monsters.  The moon wasn’t even up fully yet.  What type of being were we dealing with?  “What happened?”  I asked.
“We do not know.  The moon isn’t even high in the sky.”  Jacob responded.
            “What are we dealing with?”
“A monster of the likes we have never seen before.”  An older man came up to us.
“Lord Earle.”  I said in way of a greeting.
“Henry, my man.  Did your potion work?”
“Richard, it did not I am afraid.  It is back to the beginning.”
“Pity.  I have a feeling we could have used it with this beast.”
“Well, let’s get to it.”  Jacob stated and mounted his horse.
We rode in silence.  It seemed like days, but only hours before we heard the howl.  We knew that it was only a matter of time before it was upon us.  We jumped off our horses and prepared for the beast.  We waited only moments but it felt an eternity.
The beast came into the clearing, and I gasped.  It was huge.  It was larger than any wolf we had hunted before; about three times the size!  Its teeth dripped with blood, it walked on hind legs like a man, but was quick.  Before I could figure out what had happened he had Byron and Richard both on the ground at its feet.  Their throats were ripped from them, and they chocked on their own blood.
I was upset.  So upset that the feeling of death came over me, just like the day before when I had taken my potion.  The next thing I knew was blackness.  When I awoke the next day I lay in a pool of blood.  The bodies of all the hunters as well as a new body, which must have been the wolf, lay dismembered and scattered around me.  There was blood on my hands, in my mouth, and in my hair, all round me there was blood.
I stood and discovered I was naked.  I quickly grabbed a blood stained coat and ran.  The horses were even killed.  I could do nothing but run.  I ran all the way back to town.  I ran to my house and threw myself into my study.  I had no idea what happened.  No clue but I knew I would be labeled a coward.  Because I had lived.
I stayed in my office for days.  I only came out to eat with my wife.  Soon Lord Baron’s nephew and heir came to see me.  I answered the door.  “Lord Baron.”  I said as a greeting.
“Lord Jekyll.”  He came into my foyer, and removed his coat.  “I came to talk about what happened to my uncle.  I take it you were injured which is why you haven’t came out with the rest of the hunters.”
“Yes.  Please come with me to the drawing room.  We can discuss it there.”  I walked into the drawing room and right to the bar.  I poured both of us a large brandy.  “Here you are Lord Baron.”
“Thank you Sir.”  He said and accepted the drink; he took a large drink before speaking.
I sat down across from him and waited.  I was unsure of what he would say.
“I will get to the point.  You are the only one that lived.  What happened?”
“The wolf was larger than any we had ever seen.  It was about three times the size.  It walked upon hind legs.  It attacked.  I ran to attack it, upon seeing Jacob and Richard killed.  The next thing I knew I woke up in a pool of blood.”
“Why did it let you live?”
“We were able to kill it somehow.  I don’t know when or how.”
“It is interesting that you were the only one that lived.  Especially since you tested your concoction on yourself that night my uncle came to tell you about the hunt.”
            “I don’t like you implication.”
            “You don’t have to coward.”
“I am no coward.”  My blood began to boil.  I, again, felt death upon me.  Before I knew it my world had gone black, the last thing I heard was a scream.
I came too just hours later.  I lay quite nude in my drawing room.  Blood and body parts all around me once more, and worse my wife stood in the doorway.  “Love?”
“Mr. Edward Hyde says to congratulate you on finding a woman such as me.”  She stated.
            “Mr. Hyde?”
“He said that was his name.  The monster you became.”
            “I… A monster?”
“Yes.  You killed Lord Baron when he called you a coward.”
            “No…”
“Well, you did not this Mr. Hyde did.  But he is really you…”
I just stared at my wife.  At that moment I knew that I had made a mistake.  In an attempt to play god, God had turned me into the very thing I hated… A monster…
“We will return after these messages.”  The announcer states bringing me back to the present.  I sigh.  My love had long since passed.  She had lived a normal mortal life, by my side.  She loved me no matter the monster I became.  She was the last person to truly accept Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as one in the same.
I turn off the television.  It is playing the 1940’s version of the movie based upon a romanticized version of my life.  My friend Sir Stevenson had written my life as a short story and found his fame.  I sigh and know that one day Mr. Hyde will be back and there was nothing I can do to stop him… Nothing I want to do to stop him… I have finally embraced the monster within…

“But mom, I want to eat my candy!”  Suzie, my five year old, cried at me.
“I have to check the candy first my lovely little witch.”  I told her as I dumped her Halloween candy in the middle of my table.
“Mom, can’t we have one piece?”  My twelve year old, Greg, asked.
I sighed.  “Pick one piece and I will check it.”
“This one!”  Suzie said; she held up a very large lollipop.
I sighed she would be bouncing up and down the walls all night; just what I needed.   I quickly checked the lollipop; I figured at the very least it would keep her quiet for hours.  “Here, Suzie, go put your cartoon in and stay in my sight.”  I said and handed her back the candy.  “Greg?”
“Can I have the liquid candy?”  He asked; he handed me what looked like a blood bag.
“I suppose.”  I said.  I took the bag and checked it for holes or nicks.  “Here” I said; I handed him back his candy.  “Finish your homework and keep an eye on Suzie.”
“Yes, mom!”  Greg went into the living room and pulled out his math book.
I sat down and started to sort the candy, we lived in a good neighborhood, but since my husband was killed in the line of duty three years ago I was a bit more protective than I once was.  I threw away some candy called “Zombie Brains.”  It was a goo candy, but it looked tampered with and there was no way I would let my children ever eat something that even hinted at being tampered with.
After a couple of hours, Suzie fell asleep in front of the T.V. and Greg was dozing next to her.  I piled their candies in their bags and marked them and put them up.  I put them to bed and sat down to work.  I worked from home doing something I never thought I would, but it paid the bills and allowed me to make ends meet now that my husband was gone.  “Hello, this is Natasha.”  I said as the phone beeped in my ear.  I don’t know how I came up with my phone name, but Judith just didn’t sound like a phone sex agent’s name.
I went to wake my children at eight the next morning.  I would sleep while they were at school.  I am glad I stopped to get the paper first.  I opened the door, this child stood in front of my door.  At first I thought the child was just wearing their Halloween costume, until they charged at me.  I didn’t think, I just slammed the door in its face.  I went and checked all doors, and the three windows in our house.
“Mom.”  Greg was up.  “What’s going on?  I heard a crash?”
“Nothing, go back to bed sweetie, they canceled school.”
             “Why?”
“Because you are going to spend the day with your mom.”  I tried to smile.  It must have fooled him.
“Okay.”  He said with a yawn and went back to bed.
I was suddenly very happy there were not windows in the bedrooms.  I turned on news, and was shocked.
“This is just in!  A madman is claiming he created the zombies, he poisoned a candy called “Zombie Brains” and then proceeded to give it out to the children in his neighborhood.  We have footage of the neighborhood.  Just stay inside and lock your doors.  Bullets to the head do seem to work, if one gets in.” The news anchor reported.
The camera shot to what I knew to be footage of our neighborhood.  I am so glad I disposed of that candy last night.  There was a young child in the middle of the world.  It looked to be Suzie’s friend, Janey.  She had half her jaw ripped off and her eye hanging out, she was dragging her broken foot and she moved down the middle of the street.  Then I saw Maggie, Janey’s mom.
“Janey!”  Maggie ran to her; she stopped and looked at her child.  “NO!”
Janey charged at her mother, with a speed I never thought of when it came to zombies.  Soon Janey had her mother on the ground and she had bitten into her neck, she left a gaping hole.
I didn’t want to watch.  But I could not turn away as she ripped into her mother’s body and started to eat the organs.  I was going to be sick.  I barely made it to the toilet before I lost last night’s dinner.
I went to my bedroom and opened up the safe I swore that as long as I lived I would never open, my husband’s gun safe.   Then I woke up the kids.  “Babies, get dressed.”
I moved quickly packing food and water.  I packed all the bullets and the handguns.  Greg and Suzie were at the kitchen table eating their cereal.  “Greggy, you remember when dad taught you to shoot?”
            “Yeah why?”
“Baby, look there has been an outbreak.  Zombies.”  I said and flipped on the news, I prayed that it no longer showed Janey.
“Whatever mom.”  Greg said but looked toward the T.V.; thankfully it was the news anchor.
“The virus seems to be spreading rapidly.  It has spread to the whole town.  At nine o’ clock this evening the county will be bombed, and the zombies destroyed.  If you are a living citizen, without any bite marks, or bleeding eyes you have until eight fifty-nine tonight to get out of the county.  This concludes the news.”  The screen went fuzzy.
“We got to go kids.  Stay here while I get the car; do not open the door.”  I left the house; quickly I closed the door behind me.  I keep an eye out for the zombies.  Most of them kids.  I got to the car; I saw one, it on the hood and munched on what looked like a string of intestines.  I raised my rifle, took aim and fired.  The head exploded.  I ran to the car, unlocked it and jumped inside, just as a group of zombies descended upon me.
I turned on the car, backed up quickly and then moved forward and ran over the zombies.  I kept backing up and driving forward until they are all nothing but splotches of blood on my driveway.  I drove the car up to the door; I climbed over the driver seat and pulled open my house door and grabbed my children.
I threw them in the back seat and slammed the door.  I got back into the driver seat and took off; as I ran over a dozen or so more of the miniature zombies.  Mentally I had started to call them mini zombies, rather than acknowledging that they are children.
I just drove; but about three miles from the county boarder and only an hour to go, the car died.  I wanted to cry.  I looked at my babies in the back seat.  Fear in their eyes, their faith in me to make sure they lived.
“Babies, we are going to have to run for it.  I want you to stay next to me.”  I got out of the car did a sweep of the area; there were so many abandoned cars, which can only mean the zombies are around.  “I want you to take this gun Greggy, and stay in front of your sister; I will stay behind, you both.  We have to move quickly.”
“Mommy, I am scared!”  Suzie cried.
I knelt down.  “Suzie Q, I know.  I am scared as well, but we have to make it out of the county sweetie.  Stay behind your brother and don’t look back.”
             “Mom…”
“Greggy, it will all be okay.  Let’s go.”
For most of the trip nothing eventful happened and we could see the blockade.  We had fifteen minutes to make it to the blockade, and then they attacked.
There were hundreds of them, and they all ran towards my babies.  I fired; I didn’t care where I hit.  I did what I could, but I knew that we could never beat them.  I tried; I needed to save my children, I tried to clear a path.  But I couldn’t.  They were able to divide us.  I could barely move; my soul died as I saw my Suzie Q bitten, and another group took my son from me, as they ripped him apart in front of me.  I was surrounded.  I had used all my ammo except for one bullet.  I looked at the thing that was once my Suzie Q, now a brain hungry zombie, an undead creature…  I took aim as I heard the planes over head, and I shot… I killed the zombie that was once my child.  I heard nothing, as the first bombs hit.  My last thought was it was strange that I barely felt the heat, as I headed into the darkness that promised a peaceful, painless oblivion…

Artificial Life

I am the reason the world ended.  I am the reason that there is no human life left on Plant Earth.  So where am I writing this from?  Space, of course.  I live in space.  Always have in away, ever since I found out about it.  So when my eyesight went and thus crushing my dream of being an astronaut, I turned to astro- and nuclear- physics.  I have an IQ higher than any other that has ever existed.  I was what you would call a golden child.  I created devices that were once considered grand designs of science fiction; but I made them a reality.  I created a new life… A new world… I created you…
Maybe I should start on the day the world ended.
I just looked at him, the man that was my partner, my lover, my world.  We had done this.  We had stopped the world.  We created chaos, we created destruction, we created this new world…”
“Christian, we did this…”  I wanted to die, but instead, because of a shelter we had created, we lived.
“No, we did not.”
“Yes we did!  We created the weapon!  We created something that would bring World War Five to a halt and we did, by destroying the world.”
“We did not make the call to use our anti-electromagnetic bomb.”
“I pushed the bloody button!  We should have never created it…”
“Kat, if we hadn’t, someone else would have.”
“But look at the cost.  That prize, that money, it wasn’t worth the end of the world.”
“We will just have to make the most of it, Kat.”  Christian took the back pack we had and dumped it on the ground.
“Well what do we have to live on?”
“We have a pack of matches, four bottles of water, food that we can stretch for three days and your cross bow.”
“Perfect.  Just bloody Perfect!”
“You are a great hunter, we will do fine.”
“We used an electromagnetic pulse and stopped the world from spinning for .00000037 seconds, and it killed the world.  I am surprised our bunker kept us safe.  The Earth started spinning again on its own; but look at the destruction that we caused.”
“I am sure that there are other survivors.”
“We shall see…”  I looked out at the destruction.  I did this.  I ended the world.
We wondered for days, we hunted and gathered.  Thankfully there seemed to be some type of life that survived.  But not a single human.  Except Christian and I.  I began to plot, to think.  This world was gone.  Dead… it would never be able to sustain human life again.  So it was time to jump start evolution.
For weeks I just plotted.  I was going quite mad.  Then Christian got sick.  “What the hell did you eat?”  I was upset; we had to test things before we ate them.  I grabbed one of the bottles of water; we had been living off rain water and river water that we had been boiling.
“Just some berries we ate them before.”
“Where were they?”
“Over on that bush…”  He weakly pointed at a bush about ten feet away.
“Drink this.  I will be back.”  I went over to the bush in question and gasped in horror.  It was the bloody moonseed.  I didn’t even get to turn back before I heard him gasp as he started to be effected by the paralysis.  I knew that I couldn’t save him.  I would need to pump his stomach as well as get him an antidote but I didn’t have the ingredients needed.  But it didn’t mean I wasn’t going to try.
I gathered some of the berries, hoping to make an antidote using their poison.  I was also going to need the stomach of a bird.  I grabbed my crossbow and a few roughly made arrows.  I didn’t know where I was going to find a bird, I hadn’t seen once since I set off the bomb that destroyed this world.  I searched through out the night, but I failed.  I found some other herbs, and tried to mix them.
I made him vomit many times, but I was failing.  He was having seizures at a steady pace.  I knew he was going to die.  Then I thought of something.  He had stem cells… all I would need to do us try to harvest a few of my eggs, and maybe, just maybe I could create a better race of humans.
I went back to an abandon hospital we found the day before, throwing his body in the freezer, with some snow.  Thankfully it was winter and there was snow the ground, or I would have failed in preserving his body.  I was able to do a lot of things within the old hospital walls.  But to survive, I needed to hunt and gather.
One practically bad day, I had just tried again to harvest an egg and though I got the egg I needed, I ended up hurting myself quite badly.  I would live, but it was painful.  I ran across an old community.  Inside the torn down houses I found bodies.  Not too shocking, I had come across a lot in my traveling.  However these were oddly preserved.  They would have died when the bomb stopped the Earth, but however they looked like they just passed away.
I took out some needles and started to extract some cells from their spines.  Might as well have a large genetic make up, I took a quick look at the cells in the test tube, they appeared to be useful.  I wondered how they were preserved.  I tried to find the answer but whatever preserved them was long gone.  I made a note to come back, marking it on the map I had created.  If they were still preserved when I perfected my method I would come back.
I came across an old fairground.  I use to love the fair.  The Tilt-a-Whirl was my favorite ride.  I wished there was electricity.  I used to sit on one for hours, just thinking of space, of science, of science fiction that I wanted to bring to life.  I sighed and was walking when I saw it.  Pieces of a space shuttle!  Maybe there were people.  I searched the grounds.  I found one.  He looked at me, tears in his eyes as he held on to the woman.  “She dead?”
“She just died.  She was hurt upon our reentry.  Nothing worked.  I crashed.  I killed them all.”  I saw about ten other bodies.
“Were they on the shuttle?”
“No, just me her and Jackson.”
“Jackson dead?”
“No, he went hunting.  But that was two days ago.”
“Well, we should go.  Grab your supplies.”
“No, we can’t leave her.”
“She is dead.”  Then I had a thought.  “How fresh?”
“Fresh?”
“Yes, when did she die?”
“Great!”  I pulled out my bag; at this point the lack of human contact has caused me to be quite mad.  In my normal state I would have never said great.
“What do you mean bloody great?  One of my people have died you are happy?”
“I didn’t mean it like that.”  I said with a sigh.  “I am trying to reanimate the humans, make them better, and make them strong.  You all will make great test subjects.  I need eggs and she is a female.  She might have some mature eggs.”
“What?!”
“Look, in theory I may be able to create a new race of humans and make up for the death I have caused.”
“You lost me lady.”
“I did this.”  I said waving my hand.
“You did what?”
“I killed the Earth.”
“How are you going to take care of the new life if the Earth is dead lady?”
“My name Katherine.  Not lady.”
“Well, answer the question crazy lady.”
I was getting upset.  “Look, your space ship is salvageable.  I know we sent all the equipment to create an atmosphere up to space, up to Mars.  We can rebuild there.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because I created it all.”
“You are…”
I cut him off.  “Yes, I am that Katherine.  Now pick up the body and come on.  I have shelter not to far from here and we can see if we can find that friend of yours.”  But we didn’t get a chance to move, his friend came charging out of the woods, towards us.  Crazy… He must have gotten into something.
He charged at us with whatever piece of metal he pulled of the shuttle.  Well pity.  I thought as I aimed my crossbow and took the shot.  The arrow went straight into his eye stopping him dead in his tracks as he fell to the grown with his final breath.  “Well, don’t just stand there gawking at me.”  I turned to the living one.  “Grab the body.  I need to see what caused him to go crazy.”
I walked off leaving the other to follow or not.  To be honest I didn’t care.  I was only one item short from creating my first of hopefully many, genetically advanced humans.
“Look lady this is insane.”  I heard from behind me.
“What is to say this is insane or sane?  We are the only humans on this planet.  What is your name?”
“What does it matter?  We are going to die.”
“No…”  I stopped to think, he would have a decent brain.  “Well, maybe.  But we have to fight if we want to live.”
We got to my location, and I had the new companion of mine put the bodies in the freezer where I had been keeping Christian buried in snow.  “Just put them in the freezer.”
“Whatever lady.”
For days I watched the captain of the shuttle leave and come back late at night.  I knew he was working on the shuttle.  Mars was our only choice.  The air was becoming thicker and it was harder to breathe.  The trees were now dying.  Most of the animals have died.  And the rivers had started to dry up.
On our final day on Earth, the captain came up to me.  “Well?”
“My embryos are ready for the artificial wombs.  I will put them in; once we land on Mars.  Are we ready?”
“Yes.  We have enough fuel to get there, but never come back.”
“Great.”  The captain turned from me and I bashed him up upside the head.  “I am sorry guy, but Christian cannot be dead.”  I worked quickly, I strapped him to the table, I knew the lighting storm would hit that day, I had seen the static in the air.  And I used my last bit of power to drag Christian to the table.
My concept was similar to the one in the book Frankenstein but different I was going to fill the captain’s body with stem cells from Christian and then use the electricity to transfer his brain waves.  The life and soul of a person are in the brain waves.  I prayed that it worked.  The life in my womb deserved his father.
I flipped the switch and waited for the lighting.  I did not have to wait long.  The static storm from the dying Earth hit the metal rods I had put out.  I stood by and watched as the bolts flowed through both bodies, transferring life to the other.  I waited and waited.  I waited biting my nails, praying to a god I long forgot about, a god that I didn’t believe existed.  But I prayed none the less.  Soon the storm passed and I waited for some sign that it worked.
The captain’s body moved.  It twitched a few times.  Then it was still in death.  Christian’s moved.  It twitched and then sat in as if jolted and gasped.  I waited.  I couldn’t move.  I brought back the dead.  I did it.  I played god and won.
Christian’s body turned to me.  “God lady what did you do?”
“I transferred your mind into Christian’s body.  I loved Christian too much.  His body was all I have left.  My theory was that I could have his body and your mind.  I could have that last bit of him forever.”
“I thought you were insane but this takes the cake lady.”
“I told you my name is Katherine.”
“And mine is Richard not Christian.  Give me back my body.”
“Can’t, mental transference is a one way trip.”
“You had no right lady to do this!”
“I have all the right in the world.  I am the one with the knowledge and power.  Thus it gave me the right.”
“You are not GOD!”
“I am a god.”
“You are psycho lady.”
“That is your opinion.  Now you will fly the ship to Mars.  Or die.”
“Die?”
“Well, if you do not want to come… that will be your choice.  But the planet is dying.”
“I thought the effects of your bomb were done.”
“Guess not.  The planet has been dying for weeks.  Haven’t you noticed the lack of animals?  The fact that it is getting harder and harder to breath?  The planet’s core has decided to stop again.  The planet will be completely dead in a month’s time.”
“Well that is bloody fantastic.”
“Well, Richard,” I said his name with emphasis, though he looked like my Christian.  “Are you going to fly the ship?”
“I guess I have no choice.  We will go our separate ways on Mars.  Well, as much as we can.  You had no right to do this to me, Kat…”
“You are changing, absorbing the memories in Christian’s cells.”  I said with a smile.
“No.  I am me.”
“You are you, you always will be.  You will just feel, see, and experience everything that Christian had in his short life.  You will adopt his little habits, like calling me Kat, though I hated it.”
“Well if you hate it, it can’t be so bad.”
I got up and grabbed my frozen embryos.  “Whatever.  Be prepared to fly to Mars.”
“I am ready.”  Richard jumped down from the slab, he took one last look at what was his body.  “I won’t forgive you.”
“I don’t expect you to.  At least my child shall know what their father looked like.”
“You are expecting?”
“I have been since the bomb went off.  Three days in a bunker there was not much to do.  It has been four months; I am almost 5 months along.”
“You don’t show it.”
“So, I don’t show.  Some women do not.” I walked out of our shelter and towards the ship.
Richard followed.  “You shouldn’t fly; the pressure…”
“A risk I have thought about.  It is a risk I must take.”
“Whatever, your child.”
“Get your ass in the ship.”
“Fine.” We climbed into the ship, we strapped in.   “How do we take off?”
“Hold on.”  I had rigged the launch pad to help blast us off.
“What…”  Richard never got to finish his sentence as the blasts throw the ship upward.
“Well, fly.”  I said as I got up and went into the back.  The six month journey was going to be tough.  I would have my child in space.
The months passed quickly.  I gave birth to a son, who I named after his father.  He had a set of lungs on him.  Two months after his birth we landed.  Thankfully the suits worked wonders as I set up the atmosphere.  Soon we had built a place to create a new world.  We planted crops, built houses, created an artificial world, for the artificial humans I had created.  So they were placed in their artificial wombs and grew…
Richard soon came around, we became friends, and we only had each other. We were the only two humans in an artificial world.
So as I said at the start I killed Earth, the true Earth.  I killed humanity.  I killed everything.  Even my child in a way was artificial.  He was born to a human that lost her soul.  Lost the mind she once had, but he was the first of many new humans on the new Earth…
So the world ended…
A new one born…
All because of the need for power…
Hopefully this new breed doesn’t fail…
