RANDOM WIP: Insomnia Café

Random WIP: Insomnia Café
All Rights Reserved

When I was fifteen I lied about my age and joined the military. When I was twenty seven a bullet ended my military career. After a year of physical therapy I choose to take my life savings and open up an all-night café. What I didn’t expect was that it would become the Switzerland in a sea of crazy. From the very first ‘villain’ and the very first ‘hero’ to walk into my doors I declared neutral and stayed out of it. The city is full of characters, and a few of them are my regulars. From heroes to criminals to the regular Joe off the street. And my café has become a central hub that is neutral and a safe place for all. These are my stories of my regulars at Insomnia Café.

The Prince’s Journey

Bernard Walden never knew his family. He grew up at a Catholic orphanage in the middle of nowhere Iowa, from the date of his birth. He spent his childhood playing with toy soldiers and planning one day to go to West Point. To be an officer in the Army. To lead. Right before his eighteenth birthday and three weeks before he left for West Point and left the Iowa Orphanage and loneliness behind forever, his life would change forever. It was a typical Iowa July day, humid enough he was breathing his daily intake of water, he laid down under the ancient oak tree that was his sanctuary when he was a child. Laying there he picked up an old toy solider; he used to spend days setting up enemy sides, his sides and planning how he would one day lead his Army. From childhood fantasy to reality in a way. Laying there lost in memories he let himself drift into sleep.

When he woke he found himself no longer in Iowa. He found himself in a foreign land lot to time. What was stranger was the man staring at him like he was the greatest thing he had ever seen. That was how he found himself in front of a person stating they were the Queen and he was heir to the throne. And they were at war and they needed his help. But can he help them? Can he end the war before it costs their world everything? Will he make it back to the world he grew up in? Does he want to go back? With blue eyes and whispered encouragement in his ear, will he find the ending to his journey in the land that time forgot? Or will he fail in his task and lose the choice?

To Tell You

To Tell You
All Rights Reserved

I know I was rude to you,
Many times, even mean…
Sometimes I wonder if you knew
How much I really cared…
Care… Yes, care… Though you are gone,
the word must be present tense.
Today I would love to tell you
How much you meant to me…
How you made me who I am…
Today I want to thank you for your love,
And for always being there,
Even when I pushed you away…
And push I did.
I still push.
You would think I would learn.
Because I want to tell you
How much I love you…
But I can't.
God took you home
At first I denied it…
It couldn’t be true…
You were to young…
Not even Fifty-One.
But before the denial…
Before I was told…
I already knew…
Because before that…
I begged…
Begged A God I thought I knew…
Begged for you…
Offered whatever he wanted…
But it wasn’t to be…
The barging didn’t take…
So came the denial…
The sick feeling in the pit of my stomach…
But I didn’t get to feel that for long…
To many needed me to be strong…
As God took you home.
Before I was ready for you to leave us…
Me…
I wasn’t ready for you to leave me.
Selfish?
Maybe…
But true…
Because then came the anger.
I hated you…
Hated you for leaving her…
Hurting her…
Especially her…
Leaving them…
Hurting them…
But in the end?
Most of all for leaving me…
For making me show the world how much I really feel…
I couldn’t hide it behind my mask…
This pain was too much…
Even years later I can’t hide it…
The rawness still there…
You made me show my emotions…
Even your name can bring them to the front…
Tears to my eyes…
Pains in my chest…
The hate has gone away…
Though it took a long time…
To long maybe…
But it did go away…
In its place a gaping wound…
A gaping wound that opened a door
A door to the darkness of my mind
I had once locked in a cage
It got free because of this wound
It almost cost me my sanity…
But I got the darkness back in the cage…
And allowed the wound to start to heal…
A wound that is still healing…
Will always be healing…
Because this is a space nobody can fill…
I want to tell you I love you…
And I miss you more and more each day.
I love you Dad…
And wish you were here with me today.

RANDOM WIP: Snippets Of Time

RANDOM WIP: Snippets Of Time
All Rights Reserved

One snippet of time. That is all it takes to read a postcard. When Cordelia received an unexpected postcard in her mail; she never knew that snippet of time she took to read it, and the next where she saved it, would ever turn her life on its head and take her on a whirlwind ride. Cordelia will experience things she never thought she would, from simply trying a new activity, to trying a new food, to quitting her job and taking the plunge into the unknown… and maybe along the way she will find love. All from pausing for a snippet of time.

Chapter One Excerpt:

I blinked. No return address just a simple postcard. I moved to toss it away. But for some reason I put it up on my huge industrial fridge. I sighed when I looked at my kitchen. I loved to bake. As much as I loved to write. But I hadn't made it big enough yet to give up the day job. Customer Service. I blew my hair out of my face. "The customer is always right my ass. More like the customer will always be an idiot. Isn't that right Pluto?" I asked my calico cat. He just tilted his head and looked at his bowl like 'feed me puny human.' I swear my cat thinks he really is the Roman god. I stood up and saw the postcard again. And it made me smile as I got ready for my day.

Elemental Mazes Excerpt: All Rights Reserved

Elemental Mazes Excerpt:
All Rights Reserved

Katy swallowed as they made it out of the plane. She was somewhere in Europe and about to walk into the school with the rest of Bridgett’s competitors. Two months in a maze. And they have to survive. It was barbaric but traditions never changed. Every seventy years like clockwork the Mazes happened. A rite of passage or some such nonsense. One had to be at least a fourth year student. Meaning at least twelve and had parents or guardians permission. Edgar had even competed in this farce. But she signed up to figure out what was going on. Her mother mentioned the Mazes. A test? A battle? She was not sure. But she knew it would end at the final event at Bridgett’s. How this worked out this way she was not one hundred percent sure but it had that Bridgett’s event was last. Tonight there would a welcoming feast and tomorrow they would all get to see the outside of the maze. It was miles and miles long and just as wide. But the shape and other details, such as what made up the walls were unknown until tomorrow. Then that night they would all be teleported to a starting point. Seven different ones. With one goal. Get to the key in the center and survive. Katy swallowed nervous. She still was not sure this was the best plan to deal with her birth mother. She looked toward Riley who was talking to Jerome. Jerome and she were a team. She had talked Gaivan out of being her teammate but the compromise was that Jerome was her partner. Riley was talking with a boy as tall as he was, but he was dark skinned and had a shaved head. He was Riley’s best friend. Katy always remembered him because his eyes were icy diamond blue. She was amazed by them. His name was Gabriel Hunter, but every for some reason called him Hunt. She never quite got that. It had something to do with the fact he and his dad were big game hunters. She had met him right before term started this spring and he had taught her some Archery. It seems he still takes Physical Education class, even though normally it is dropped after fifth year. She still did not know how they chose the starting points for each school. After all this was a school competition; even if in the end only one person of that school gets the last key. In the last maze there is only one key in the center instead of one per each school. The key unlocks the maze and you can teleport back to the school that is hosting. Katy took a deep breath. She looked at Jerome. “Are you sure you want to be with me?”
“Katy a little late for me to turn back now?” Jerome stated with an exasperated sigh. “And I want to be here. You are as good as my little sister. And after all I do know more magic than you. And will be teaching you the rest of your fourth year and fifth year stuff for your tests at the end of this annoying tournament.”
Katy chuckled. She then grabbed his hand and checked the henna tattoos she had done of the runes. She put them on Riley’s and Hunt’s palms and feet as well. Once they were in the maze she would put them on the rest of Bridgett’s members. She brought enough dye to last the two months. She looked down at the Uruz rune. The stared at her in the dark henna color. She put this on each hand and foot. It would provide speed and strength. To bring about their untamed potential. The most important one was of course Algiz, , protection. This would create a bit of a shield in theory against some of the harsher elements and allow a delay in any attacks and injuries. Not a whole lot, sadly, but enough that it gives them a fighting chance. Riley thought this was a genius plan when Katy had told him over break right before they went back to place their name in the pool for the competition. “It may be too late to turn back, but it does not mean I will not ask you Jerome.”
Jerome rolled his eyes as he let her check the runes. “Do we need to add any when we get in there?”
Just then Hunt and Riley came up. “Hey sis. Ready to win this?” Riley asked.
Katy rolled her eyes. “Of course, I just want to know our starting point.”
Hunt smirked. “Rumor is that we will either start at Cape Fligely, Rudolf Island, Franz Josef Land Russia or Monchique Islet, Azores Islands, Portugal.”
Riley snorted. “Opposite ends, I go for Portugal. I hate snow.”
